This unit is designed to engage students with the sights and sounds of poetry.  Our class will listen to poetry, read it to themselves and out loud, think about what the poet is saying, notice the poet's use of repetition, rhythms, rhyme, and alliteration, as well as interact with the message of the poem.  The students will then choose favorite poems for their poetry journal.  On each page, they will explain what the poem means, draw or describe the images they see when reading the poem, and identify words and phrases that give rhythm and meaning to the poem.
